Tech Breakthroughs You NEED to Know About

Written by Peter H. Diamandis | Jul 18, 2024

Each month my team and I review hundreds of science and tech advancements that are transforming the world...

Below, I’m sharing my top 3 breakthroughs in tech, science, and longevity that are currently on my mind—"what they are” and “why they're important.”

My goal is to offer you an antidote to all the pessimistic news you’re bombarded with every day.

Below is what I’m reading and focusing on this week—it is guiding my thinking, investments, companies, and teams. I hope it does the same for you.

If you find this valuable, please share it with your family and friends! Remember that we are living during the most extraordinary time ever.

Cancer Spread Risk Reduced by 62% for Melanoma

What It Is: Moderna and Merck's new cancer vaccine was tested at Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center and reduced melanoma recurrence risk by 49% when combined with immunotherapy. The Phase 3 trial, led by Dr. Jeffrey Weber of NYU Langone Health, also decreased cancer spread risk by 62%. This personalized approach targets up to 34 cancer-specific neoantigens, potentially revolutionizing cancer treatment.

Why It Matters: For me this is *amazing news.* Imagine a world where cancer becomes a manageable condition, not a death sentence. That's the promise of Moderna and Merck's groundbreaking cancer vaccine. The numbers (reducing recurrence risk by 49% and metastasis risk by 62%) are off the charts. And vaccines are cheap to produce and transport. Finally, this technology could potentially go beyond melanoma, tackling multiple cancer types, offering a manageable solution to this frightening disease.

AI Begins to Take Over Hollywood

What It Is: ElevenLabs unveiled “Iconic Voices,” enabling AI-generated voices of Judy Garland, James Dean, and others to read you your favorite book or news article. Partnering with CMG Worldwide, they're reviving Hollywood legends for audiobooks. Liza Minnelli, Garland's daughter, hails it as a way to attract new fans. This breakthrough intensifies competition for voice actors and sets a licensing precedent.

Why It Matters: Wow! Is this the “camel’s nose under the tent”? The beginning of Hollywood’s demise? First comes AI-generated voices, but what’s next? Might we next see AI-generated characters, stars and starlets? Game-changer! A chance to reshape the entertainment world. Imagine new movies written by AIs, starring classic stars in both body and voice.

Will AI Solve the American Healthcare Crisis?

What It Is: OpenAI Startup Fund and Thrive Global have unveiled Thrive AI Health, a venture developing a hyper-personalized AI health coach. Led by CEO DeCarlos Love, formerly of Google, the coach will focus on sleep, nutrition, fitness, stress management, and social connection. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Thrive Global founder Arianna Huffington highlight AI's potential to improve health and lifespans, addressing the $4.1 trillion in U.S. healthcare spending, of which 90% goes to chronic conditions.

Why It Matters: Here’s why I think OpenAI and Thrive's AI health coach is so significant. Imagine a JARVIS-like AI that knows your health data, habits, and goals. It's not just about fitness tracking—it could anticipate health issues, personalize interventions, and democratize access to expert-level wellness advice 24/7. It's the ultimate personal health assistant, potentially slashing chronic disease costs and extending lifespans. The implications? A healthier population and a transformed healthcare landscape.
